Gayatri Su-lin Pillai started her career with Astro in December 1996 as an Administrative Executive to train under the tutelage of Dr. D.B.Nihalsingha, a veteran in film from Shaw Brothers, Hong Kong. Not wanting to waste a production title on a law graduate, Dr. Nihal thought it was best she learnt the ropes and prove her salt prior to actually being acknowledged as a production assistant! It was worth the struggle and soon she was given the chance to try her hand at production for Astro Shaw’s first feature film, “Nafas Cinta” (“The Breath of Love), and within the next year she was promoted to the position of Line Producer for “KL Menjerit” (Screaming Kuala Lumpur) and “Idola” (The Idol).
In 2002 she was promoted to Executive Producer and Senior Manager of the company. As an Executive Producer she has been responsible for producing a myriad of genres for the company such as Laila Isabella (romantic comedy), Diari Romeo (teenage), Trauma (thriller), Bintang Hati (musical comedy), Berlari Ke langit (Romantic Drama), Cinta Luar Biasa, Gangster (Action drama), KL Menjerit 1 (Action Drama), Baik Punya Cilok (Friendship/Comedy), Man Laksa (Parody), Puaka Tebing Biru (Horror Drama), Zombi Kampung Pisang (Parody Comedy), Syaitan (Suspense), Anak Halal (Drama), Maut (Religious Drama), Duhai Si Pari-Pari (Slapstick Comedy), Kapoww (Action comedy), CUN (Romantic Comedy), Appalam (Family Dramedy and 1st Tamil language mainstream film after 24 years), Tolong! Awek Aku Pontianak!, (Romantic Horror Comedy) Awan Dania The Movie (Comedy), Claypot Curry Killers (Thriller), Apokalips (Futuristic Action Drama), Seru (Slasher Horror), Hoore Hoore (musical), Paper Moon (Chinese Romantic Drama),Husin, Mon & Jin Pakai Toncit (Horror Comedy), Bikers Kental (Action Comedy) and many others, with approximately 50 films under her belt.
Even after being promoted to Executive Producer, Gayatri, or more often known as Gaya, still enjoys taking a breather and taking on the role of Line Producer and performed this role alongside being the Executive Producer for films such as Kala Malam Bulan Mengambang, Apa Kata Hati, Misteri Jalan Lama and Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah. In March 2003, she was promoted to Senior Executive Producer and currently, she is the Vice President of Astro Shaw Sdn Bhd and Tayangan Unggul Sdn. Bhd. cum Senior Executive Producer for film production.
The company has been honoured with over 105 awards through the years, and has been invited to participate in numerous film festivals around the world. Films such as KL Menjerit, Kala Malam Bulan Mengambang and Papadom have all won the Best Film honour in the local Malaysian Film Festival held annually. Gaya’s passion for Malaysian film sees her producing more local content in all three languages, Malay, Chinese and Indian and she hopes one day to make Malaysia known on the world map as a major producer and distributor of quality films.
Born with mixed parentage, Gayatri Su-Lin Pillai grew up in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. She had her early education at Assunta Primary School, Petaling Jaya and continued at Assunta Secondary School. In 1991, she went to United World College, Singapore to do her General Certificate of Secondary Education (GSCE) and continued to do the International Baccalaureate. She obtained her Law Degree, Llb Hons. at University of Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom in 1996.
